The best robot lawn mower for most mid-size yards is the ECOVACS GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO: it covers up to 1/2 acre, adjusts its cutting height in the app from 1.18 to 3.54 inches, climbs 50% slopes and needs no boundary wire or RTK antenna. For small, flat lawns the Segway Navimow i105N is the budget pick, and for big, tree-shaded lots up to 3/4 acre the Neomow X SE is the one to look at. Before you buy any of them, check one number most reviews skip: whether the mower can cut at the height your grass type needs.

How we chose
We started from Amazon’s Robotic Lawn Mowers best-seller list (checked October 30, 2026), dropped accessories and models with too few ratings to say anything, and kept four wire-free mowers that cover different lawn sizes. Specs come from the manufacturers’ spec pages and manuals; ratings are the Amazon figures shown on that date. We did not test these mowers. Where a hands-on reviewer reported a weakness, we name the source.
We then lined each mower’s cutting-height range up against the mowing heights the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension recommends for common lawn grasses. That comparison decides more than navigation hardware does, because a robot mows several times a week at one fixed height. If that height is wrong for your grass, the lawn suffers every week.
Robot lawn mowers compared
| Mower | Rated lawn size | Cutting height | Cutting width | Max slope | Navigation | Amazon rating (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECOVACS GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO | 1/2 acre | 1.18-3.54 in (app) | 12.96 in | 50% (27°) | Multiline LiDAR + 3D ToF + AI camera | 3.9/5 (188) |
| Segway Navimow i105N | 1/8 acre | 2-3.6 in (manual knob) | 7.1 in | 30% (17°) | RTK + vision | 4.1/5 (400) |
| Sunseeker X3 Plus | 0.3 acre | 1.6-3.2 in | 7.9 in | 30% (17°) | RTK + visual SLAM | 4.1/5 (54) |
| HOOKII Neomow X SE | 3/4 acre | 1.18-3.35 in | 11 in | 45% (24°) | 3D LiDAR SLAM + vision | 4.7/5 (15) |
Sources for every figure are listed at the end. Sunseeker’s own shop lists the X3 Plus cutting width as 7.9 inches; the Amazon listing says 8 inches.
Check your grass before the mower
The University of Arkansas extension fact sheet FSA6023 gives these mowing heights for home lawns:
| Grass | Suggested height | Robots that can reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid bermudagrass | 0.5-1.5 in | Only the top of the range: GOAT A2000 and Neomow X SE (1.18 in minimum) |
| Common bermudagrass | 1.5-2.5 in | All four, but the Navimow i105N only from 2 in |
| Zoysiagrass | 0.75-2.5 in | All four in the upper half of the range |
| Centipedegrass | 1.5-2.0 in | GOAT A2000, Neomow X SE, Sunseeker X3 Plus; Navimow i105N only at exactly 2 in |
| Kentucky bluegrass | 2.5-3.5 in | All four |
| Tall fescue / St. Augustinegrass | 2.5-4.0 in | All four, none above 3.6 in |
The pattern is clear. Cool-season lawns and St. Augustine sit comfortably inside every robot’s range. Hybrid bermuda kept short is the problem case: no mower on this list cuts below 1.18 inches, so if you keep a golf-style bermuda lawn under an inch, a robot will leave it taller than you want. A reel mower suits that lawn better (see our reel mower guide).
1. ECOVACS GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO: best overall for 1/4 to 1/2 acre
The GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO navigates with LiDAR instead of satellite positioning, so it needs no boundary wire and no RTK reference station. That matters if your lawn has trees or sits close to a two-story house, where satellite-based mowers can lose their fix. ECOVACS rates it at 2,691 to 4,306 sq ft per hour depending on the speed setting, which puts a full 1/4-acre pass (10,890 sq ft) at roughly 2.5 to 4 hours.
Who it’s for: lawns between about 1/4 and 1/2 acre, sloped backyards, and anyone who wants to change cutting height from the app between seasons.
Who should skip it: owners of lawns under 1/8 acre (you pay for capacity you won’t use) and anyone whose lawn runs past 1/2 acre.
Pros
- Electric height adjustment from 1.18 to 3.54 inches, set in the app.
- 50% (27°) slope rating inside the work area, the highest here.
- 12.96-inch cutting width with dual blade discs, close to double the Navimow’s 7.1 inches.
- 50-minute recharge on a 3.0 Ah battery, so short runtime costs little downtime.
- Built-in TruEdge edge trimmer for the strip along borders.
Cons
- 3.9/5 from 188 Amazon ratings is the lowest score of the four.
- Slope limit drops to 20% at virtual boundaries, so steep edges still need a string trimmer.
- Needs a 2.95 ft passage to move between lawn areas.
2. Segway Navimow i105N: best for small, flat lawns
The i105N has the most ratings among the top six on Amazon’s robot mower best-seller list, with 4.1/5 from 400 ratings. It is also the smallest machine here, rated for 1/8 acre (about 5,445 sq ft). Segway’s spec page gives an area capacity of 0.015 to 0.025 acre per hour, so one full pass of a 1/8-acre lawn takes 5 to 8 hours of mowing. That is fine for a robot that runs most days, but it explains why the rating stops at 1/8 acre.
Who it’s for: small front or back lawns that are mostly flat, with grass kept at 2 inches or taller (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, St. Augustine).
Who should skip it: bermuda or centipede owners who want to cut below 2 inches, and anyone with slopes over 30%.
Pros
- 4.1/5 from 400 Amazon ratings, the largest rating pool of the four.
- 58 dB(A) noise level per Segway.
- IP66 rating for the mower, charging station and power supply.
- Recharges to 95% and picks up where it stopped, per the Navimow manual.
Cons
- US-model cutting height starts at 2 inches, set by a manual knob, which rules out short warm-season lawns.
- 2.55 Ah battery gives about 60 minutes per charge and takes about 90 minutes to recharge.
- Slope limit is 30% inside the lawn and only 10% at the boundary.
3. Sunseeker X3 Plus: best middle ground up to 0.3 acre
The X3 Plus combines RTK satellite positioning with visual mapping (Sunseeker calls the system AONavi), which is meant to hold position where trees partly block the sky. Sunseeker states it cuts about 0.06 acre per hour, so a 1/4-acre lawn takes a little over 4 hours per pass. Its 1.6-inch minimum height covers centipede and common bermuda, which the Navimow can’t do well.
Who it’s for: suburban lawns of 1/8 to 0.3 acre with a few beds and trees, and warm-season grass kept between 1.6 and 3.2 inches.
Who should skip it: hilly yards (30% slope limit) and tall fescue owners who like to mow at the top of the 4-inch range in summer.
Pros
- Wider height range at the low end than the Navimow (1.6 vs 2 inches).
- Dual-lens camera that Sunseeker says recognizes over 200 object types, plus ultrasonic sensing.
- Roughly 2.4 times the Navimow’s rated area (0.3 vs 1/8 acre).
- Rain sensor pauses mowing and sends the mower back to the dock.
Cons
- Only 54 Amazon ratings so far (4.1/5), a thin base for judging long-term reliability.
- 30% (17°) slope limit, the same as the Navimow.
- Maximum height of 3.2 inches is below the top of the tall fescue and St. Augustine range.
4. HOOKII Neomow X SE: best for large or shaded lawns
The Neomow X SE puts a spinning 3D LiDAR on the roof and needs no RTK antenna, so it does not depend on satellites at all. That is the reason to pick it for lawns under heavy tree cover, where RTK mowers like the Navimow and Sunseeker are most likely to struggle. Hookii lists up to 700 m² (about 0.17 acre) per charge for the Neomow X family, so a 3/4-acre lawn gets finished over four or more charge cycles.
Who it’s for: lawns from about 1/2 to 3/4 acre, especially with mature trees, and owners who need many zones (the listing allows 40 custom areas).
Who should skip it: anyone who wants edges cut flush, and owners of small lawns who would be paying for range they don’t need.
Pros
- Rated for 3/4 acre (32,670 sq ft), the largest area here.
- No RTK antenna or wire; works under trees and at night per Hookii.
- 45% (24°) slope rating and an 11-inch cutting width.
- 4.7/5 on Amazon, the highest score of the four.
Cons
- The 4.7/5 comes from only 15 ratings.
- MowerRanker’s review of the Neomow X line notes it leaves about 2 inches uncut at hard edges and, being front-wheel drive, can slip on damp slopes well below its rating.
- MowerRanker also lists no edge-cutting mode and no rain sensor for the line, so plan to trim borders and check the weather schedule.
How to pick the right robot mower
1. Measure the grass, not the lot
Rated area means mowed area. Subtract the house, driveway, beds and patio from your lot size. A 1/3-acre lot often has well under 1/4 acre of actual lawn, which puts it inside the Sunseeker’s or GOAT’s range instead of the Neomow’s.
2. Match the height range to your grass
Use the table above. Short-cut warm-season lawns need a low minimum (GOAT A2000 or Neomow X SE). Cool-season lawns and St. Augustine need a high maximum; every mower here reaches at least 3.2 inches, and the Navimow goes to 3.6. Raising height for summer heat is easier with app-controlled adjustment (GOAT A2000) than with a knob (Navimow i105N).
3. Count the hours per pass
Divide your lawn area by the mowing rate. A robot that needs 8 hours for one pass has to run almost every day to keep up in peak growth. A robot that finishes in 3 hours leaves slack for rain days, when mowers with a rain sensor stay docked.
4. Check the sky over your lawn
RTK mowers (Navimow, Sunseeker) position themselves by satellite and work best with open sky above the reference point. LiDAR mowers (GOAT A2000, Neomow X SE) map their surroundings instead. If big trees cover much of your lawn, lean toward LiDAR.
5. Check slopes at the edges
Manufacturers quote the slope inside the lawn. At virtual boundaries the limits are lower: 10% for the Navimow i105N and 20% for the GOAT A2000. A steep bank along a fence line will still need a string trimmer.
Whichever you choose, a robot mower doesn’t replace the rest of lawn care. Feeding still matters, and our guides on fertilizer for bermuda grass, St. Augustine fertilizer and centipede grass fertilizer cover that side.
FAQ
Do robot lawn mowers work on overgrown grass?
Not well. CNET notes that robot mowers are built to maintain a lawn, not to cut it down, and that the mowers it tried recommended cutting the lawn first before starting the robot. Mow to your target height with a regular mower, then let the robot keep it there.
Do I still need a boundary wire?
None of the four mowers here needs one. Older wired models such as the WORX Landroid M use a perimeter wire, and owner reviews on its Amazon listings describe wires being pulled up or cut. Wire-free mowers set boundaries on a map in the app instead.
How often should a robot mower run?
Often enough that each pass removes only a small slice of the blade. Extension services give the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass height in one mowing. Robots meet that easily because they cut small amounts several times a week.
What is the best robot lawn mower for slopes?
Of these four, the ECOVACS GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO has the highest slope rating at 50% (27°), followed by the Neomow X SE at 45% (24°). The Navimow i105N and Sunseeker X3 Plus are both rated for 30%.
Is a robot mower better than a riding mower for a large yard?
Above about 3/4 acre, none of these robots is rated for the job. For lots of an acre or more, a zero-turn mower is the faster option.
