The best deck paint for pressure treated wood is usually a solid color deck stain, not a true paint.
Our top pick is Thompson’s WaterSeal Solid Color Waterproofing Stain, because its label lets you start just 30 days after you build, and one coat is enough.
If you want the look of real paint, go with KILZ Porch & Patio Floor Paint… but only over a primer.
Each maker gives a different wait time for new lumber, so we put those side by side.
Why new pressure treated wood can’t be painted right away
New pressure treated lumber is soaking wet when you buy it.
McCoy’s, a building supply chain, says it leaves the factory at 45 to 90% moisture.
Paint wants the wood down around 12 to 15%, or it traps water underneath and peels.
The one exception is lumber stamped “KDAT” (kiln-dried after treatment) on the end tag, which was dried again at the mill.
The 5-second splash test
Sprinkle a few drops of water on several boards, in sun and in shade.
If the water soaks in and darkens the wood within about five seconds, it’s ready (that’s Thompson’s version of the test).
If the drops bead up and sit there, wait a week and try again.
Culpeper Wood, a lumber treater, says newer treated wood can pass this test as soon as 30 days after the project is finished.
How we chose
We didn’t test these coatings ourselves.
We read each maker’s label, product page or data sheet for wait time, primer, coats, coverage and cure time.
Then we checked Amazon ratings and owner review summaries for real complaints.
Every product here says on its own page that it works on pressure treated or new wood.

1. Thompson’s WaterSeal Solid Color Stain: best if you want to start soonest
This is the pick for a deck you just built and want protected before winter.
Thompson’s says to wait 30 days on new pressure treated lumber, the shortest wait of the four.
It hides the grain but lets the wood texture show, so it reads as “painted” from a few feet away.
It holds 4.2/5 from 261 Amazon ratings for the Natural Cedar color (Nov 2026).
Pros
- One coat is enough, per the maker; add a second within 4 hours for deeper color.
- Thompson’s guarantees it 6 years on decks and 15 years on fences and siding.
- No primer and no separate sealer needed.
Cons
- Amazon’s owner review summary is mixed on durability; some say the stain wore off sooner than expected.
- You need dry weather: no rain for 24 hours, and temps above 50°F for 48 hours.
Skip it if you want a glossy, painted-floor look.
2. DEFY Solid Color Wood Stain: best for KDAT lumber and harsh sun
DEFY suits a deck built from kiln-dried lumber, or one that gets blasted by afternoon sun.
The maker adds zinc nanoparticles, which it compares to sunscreen for wood, to slow fading.
It’s water-based, so you clean up with soap and water.
It has 4.5/5 from 162 Amazon ratings for Dark Cocoa (Nov 2026).
Pros
- Kiln-dried lumber can be stained right away, per DEFY.
- Matte finish in 7 colors, from White to Barn Red.
- Dry to the touch in 1-2 hours; deck use after 24 hours.
Cons
- Regular wet-treated lumber needs 3 to 6 months first.
- Most jobs need 2 coats, and DEFY says to mix a third of an old jug into each new one so colors match.
Skip it if your deck is wet-treated, brand new and you can’t wait a season.
3. #1 Deck Advanced Solid Color: best for a weathered older deck
This one fits a pressure treated deck that’s a few years old and gone gray.
SaverSystems (the maker) lists pressure treated lumber by name and sells a matching cleaner and brightener for prep.
It sits at 4.5/5 from 267 Amazon ratings for Classic Taupe (Nov 2026).
Pros
- Opaque finish fully hides the grain, stains and graying.
- Can go over an old solid stain that’s still stuck on well.
- Low VOCs (under 60 g/L), so the smell is mild.
Cons
- Lowest coverage here: 100-150 sq ft per gallon for the two required coats.
- Owners say it’s thin, dries very flat, and colors can look lighter than expected.
Skip it if you want to buy as few gallons as possible.
4. KILZ Porch & Patio Floor Paint: best if you want real paint
Pick this if you want a smooth, low-luster painted look, like a classic porch floor.
It’s a true 100% acrylic latex paint, and it has the most ratings here: 4.6/5 from 2,801 Amazon ratings for Silver Gray (Nov 2026).
Amazon’s review summary says owners like the coverage and how fast it dries.
Pros
- Up to 300-400 sq ft per gallon on smooth boards, per KILZ.
- Recoat in 4-6 hours.
- Mildew-resistant finish.
Cons
- New wood needs cleaning, light sanding and a coat of KILZ 3 Premium Primer first.
- Only two colors (Silver Gray and Slate Gray), and KILZ warns the surface can be slippery when wet.
- Wait 72 hours before normal use.
Skip it if you hate prep work: primer plus two coats is the most steps of the four.

FAQ
Do I need to prime pressure treated wood before painting?
For true paint, yes.
Culpeper Wood recommends an alkyd oil-based primer and two coats of acrylic latex, and KILZ calls for its KILZ 3 Premium Primer on new wood.
The three solid stains here don’t need a primer.
How long should I wait to paint a new pressure treated deck?
It ranges from 30 days (Thompson’s) to 3-6 months (DEFY, #1 Deck).
Let the splash test decide, not the calendar.
Is stain or paint better for pressure treated wood?
Thompson’s explains that stain soaks into the wood, while paint covers the grain and lets you pick a sheen.
On a new deck, a solid stain skips the primer step, so it’s the easier job.
Should I clean a brand-new deck before coating it?
Yes.
Thompson’s says new boards can carry “mill glaze,” a shiny layer of hardened sap from the planer that blocks the coating.
